Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on October 28, 2022, via the official Call of Duty Twitter account today. Alongside the release date, the developers revealed some artwork for the next installment of the franchise.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date official revealed

This reveal from the official Call of Duty Twitter account has what seemingly might be the artwork of the new title. It contains the iconic M and W utilized in the first Modern Warfare game with green theming highlighting the Roman numeral for two as well as the iconic character, Simon "Ghost" Riley.

The release date announcement is a follow-up on its reveal back in April of this year that had a "new era" theme for Call of Duty in mind. Here, Modern Warfare 2 was officially announced via just the flash of a logo within a video clip that included some indistinct chatter along with lines feigning some sort of map.

Thoughts and rumblings of a Modern Warfare sequel first came up in Activision's 2022 first-quarter financial results in which Modern Warfare 2 was set to be the "most advanced" Call of Duty game yet.

As the sequel to Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare from 2019, Modern Warfare 2 will have its story focus on Colombian drug cartels and according to a report from Video Games Chronicle, will be “a grittier take on Modern Warfare 2019's campaign,” with more of a focus on close-quarters combat alongside the tried and true Call of Duty feel.

Modern Warfare 2 is set to have its campaign gameplay revealed during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest in early June, according to a report from writer Tom Henderson via Exputer, with a multiplayer reveal set for August of this year.
