Sent to Coventry - These FUT Icons could have played for the Sky Blues

The Sky Blues of Coventry City are a club on the rise after troubling times.

Years of uncertainty and not even playing in the city of Coventry have finally started to heal.

However, we're going to run through some of the absolute ICONS that could have played for the club if things had worked out...

Back in business

Once a club that was guaranteed a new manager every few months, stability has arrived in the form of current manager Mark Robins.

The club has a history of producing incredible youth talent and harbouring that of other teams. Callum Wilson and James Maddison are two current stars, capped by England, who started out life with their hometown club.

Coventry also helped talent like Jordan Henderson, Kasper Schmeichel, and Patrick van Aanholt develop while on loan at the club.

The bigger problem is the sheer amount of talent the club has passed on over the years.

Thierry Henry

Yep, the man you likely associate with Arsenal could have once donned the Sky Blue and plied his trade at Highfield Road. Henry was on the Coventry City radar in 1998 while at Monaco.

A long-time rumour within the club has been that French icons Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet were in talks to come to the club for a combined £8M, but Coventry was maxed out at £7.5M.

Can you imagine 500k standing between a club and these two players? How every different the landscape of the Premier League could have been.

Former Coventry scout Ray Clake confirmed that Henry was a target, but the verdict is out on Trezeguet. The globetrotting scout is the source for these revelations which will likely break the hearts of the Sky Blue army.

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Another prestigious talent turned legend that went on to bigger success at a club wearing red. Ruud van Nistelrooy was approached by Coventry back in 1997 but a deal couldn't be struck.

The deal would have come as he moved from Den Bosch to Heerenveen and was a huge success in the Eredivisie. A move to PSV and then Manchester United would transpire over the next few years. Van Nistelrooy went on to score 150 goals in 219 appearances for The Red Devils.

Many other high-profile players were subject to scouting and received offers from the Sky Blues in this time period including Freddie Ljungberg, Mario Melchiot and Boudewijn Zenden.

It wasn't to be for Coventry but at least they got to see their own icons like Darren Huckerby, Dion Dublin and Robbie Keane play instead.
