FIFA 23 Chemistry: Overhauled system makes it 'easier than ever' to build dream XI

Ultimate Team is EA's moneymaker, and we expect that to continue into FIFA 23.

With EA's focus firmly on the popular game mode, a redefined chemistry system is set to revolutionise how we build squads in the upcoming game.

This has been designed to make it "easier than ever" to build your dream XI in Ultimate Team, so take a look at how it works below.

How to earn Chemistry in FUT 23

Players can earn up to three Chemistry Points by having players of the same Nationality/Region, League and Club in your Starting XI.

Adding players to your Starting XI of the same Nationality/Region, League and Club will earn Chemistry by reaching thresholds. Here's how it works:

1 Chemistry
2 Chemistry
3 Chemistry
Club
2 Players
4 Players
7 Players
Nationality/Region
2 Players
5 Players
8 Players
League
3 Players
5 Players
8 Players

You will only need one additional player from the same Club or Nationality/Region to unlock the first point of Chemistry.

Matching both Club and Nationality/Region will gain 2 Chemistry.

Key Changes

  • No negative impact on attributes caused by low chemistry.
  • Overall squad chemistry has been removed. Individual player chemistry is the focus.
  • Positional links have been removed.
  • The Loyalty system has been removed.

In-game Chemistry & Substitutions

Players who are substituted into a match will play with no Attribute increase from the Chemistry system.

Remember that in FUT 23, negative Attributes have been removed, so even at 0 Chemistry, players will perform at their base Attributes.

Once a FUT match has started, any adjustments made to the team tactics, formations or player positions will not affect the Chemistry of your Starting XI players.

How does the new system work?

Without an overall squad chemistry, each player now has a maximum of three chemistry points.

Players may only add chemistry points when played in their preferred position in the starting XI, and they will contribute to others when the same criteria are met.

NO LINKS - Players can boost chemistry from all over the pitch

The chemistry of each individual player is then accounted for by the number of players in the starting XI who share the same league or nation, with the same club adding an extra boost!

Chemistry Points:

  • Club - Two increments needed to reach the threshold. Two players who share a club will each earn one chemistry point.
  • League - Three increments needed to reach the threshold. Three players who share a league will each earn one chemistry point.
  • Nation - Three increments needed to reach the threshold. Three players who share a nation will each earn one chemistry point.
  • Manager Bonus - One increment to all players in starting XI who share the same nationality or league.
  • Icon - Icons count as two increments towards the nation threshold. Icons will always have full chemistry when played in their preferred position.
  • Heroes - Heroes count as two increments towards the league threshold and one towards the nation threshold. Heroes will always have full chemistry when played in their preferred position.

EA has included the following in its chemistry deep dive:

*Note* - The Chemistry values being presented here are not final. We will be looking at player feedback around the Chemistry Thresholds for each of the three parameters, and may be making adjustments before FUT 23 launches. We’ll be publishing an updated Pitch Notes article at a later date with a full Chemistry breakdown, so stay tuned.

Positioning

The first thing to note about the new positioning structure is that players out of position will NOT receive any chemistry boosts to their attributes.

Players out of position will also not contribute to the threshold of other players in the starting XI either.

However, players played out of position will not see their attributes negatively impacted.

Alternative positions

From the outset of FUT 23, every base player will have up to three alternative positions.

Your players' position can be changed with the new all-in-one position modifier item which has replaced the individual position modifiers.

Each position will also have an automatic alternative position which will count towards one of their three alternatives.

Players featuring in themed position change campaigns can be given new preferred and alternative positions.

Formation changes

There are no Right Forward (RF) or Left Forward (LF) positions in FUT 23.

Any formation that used RF and LF (4-3-2-1 / 3-4-2-1) has now been changed to the Centre Forward (CF) position.

Chemistry styles

As far as we know, there are no new chemistry styles in FUT 23.

With the new chemistry system, chemistry styles will still boost certain attributes for your players.

  • When a Player is at 1 Chemistry, they will get a small boost to their Attributes.
  • When a Player is at 2 Chemistry, they get a medium boost to their Attributes.
  • When a Player is at 3 Chemistry, they will get a full boost to their Attributes

EA added the following in their chemistry deep dive:

*note* - We are still tuning exactly how much Chemistry Styles will impact Attributes, and will have more to share in an upcoming Chemistry pitch notes

SBCs

Squad Building Challenges will still be available in FUT 23, but they will work in a slightly different way.

EA has offered the following information:

We will still continue offering unique puzzle building in SBCs with minimum, exact, or maximum Chemistry requirements.
There are two ways we will be asking players to build squads:
  • Total Chemistry of all Players combined, up to a maximum of 33
  • Chemistry Points per Player between 0 and 3
For example, an SBC might ask for a minimum of two Chemistry Points per Player, meaning all eleven Players need at least two Chemistry Points.
