September is the month when postseason pictures take shape and players prepare for what’s next. For some, it’s getting in the mindset of playing extra games while for others, it’s deciding their future in the sport. As players get older, the question looms: how much longer will they be around?

Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer recently told reporters 2018 could be his last season in the big leagues. The 15-year veteran has spent his whole career with the Twins and will be a free agent at the end of the year. It’s unclear what the future is between the two sides, but Mauer could choose retirement over playing with another squad if the club opts to let him walk in free agency. Whether Mauer retires is in the air, but his comments got me thinking about other players that could call it quits at the end of the year.

Here, we won’t look at players who have already decided to retire such as Victor Martinez, Chase Utley, and David Wright, but rather players who might retire for various reasons but have yet to comment on the matter. With that said, let’s look at five players we could see retire at season’s end.
