The hits just keep on coming for the guys in orange and blue, otherwise known as the New York Mets. In a season that seems to be one giant Friday the 13th, it seems there is no end in sight to the constant string of bad luck.
After days of expecting news from several doctors, outfielder Yoenis Cespedes finally announced on Wednesday that he will miss the rest of the season, and then some, to repair both of his heels.
What is going on in Flushing?
Well, no one really knows.
It is no secret that the Mets have been a hot mess all season. From countless injuries to batting out of order, nothing has seemed to go the Mets' way. The news on their slugger was just par for the course.
All week there has been a major disconnect between the Mets' star player and his coaching staff. Cespedes told the media about his heel injury before his coaching staff, making the Mets front office look like fools.
During his press conference on Wednesday, some much-needed clarity was provided, where it looked as though The Mets and Cespedes were finally on the same page.
Though there is no date set yet, Cespedes will get surgery on both of his heels and will need a minimum eight to ten months of recovery time. Assistant/interim GM John Ricco mentioned that there would be no way of knowing for sure how long it would take Cespedes to recover until a doctor assesses the situation in his heels during surgery.
While this news is not surprising at all considering the history of Cespedes and the injury bug, as well as the Mets' continued bad luck, it's twisting the knife in the body of an already bleeding Mets season.
A wasted $110 million
What a disappointment Cespedes has been since the Mets signed him to a monster contract worth $110m over four years. He has played in 119 games for the Mets since signing that ridiculous contract in late November 2016.
Even if Cespedes was healthy, the Mets still wouldn't be able to get rid of him. Not only did the Mets give Cespedes an absurd amount of money, they also gave him a no-trade clause!
While Cespedes provides a ton of power and makes the Mets offense significantly more dangerous, the good just has not outweighed the bad, and here we are today. The slugger has yet to play a full season for New York, and it doesn't seem like that would be realistic until the final season of his contract in 2020. Even then, it doesn't seem very likely.
Ultimately, the Mets really made a huge mistake signing an oft-injured Cespedes to an insane contract. What he did to get the Mets to the World Series in 2015 will not be overlooked or forgotten, but that was a very long time ago. Cespedes has been nothing but a disappointment to his team since then.
The Cespedes contract has serious potential to enter the "What Could Have Been" Hall of Fame, and former GM Sandy Alderson surely wishes he had this one back.
