Whisper it but England fans have reason to be cheerful after their side registered two decent performances against the Netherlands and Italy.

In Amsterdam last week, Gareth Southgate watched his side overrun Ronald Koeman’s limp Oraanje. On Tuesday night, the same players took the game to the Azzurri in a performance brimming with enterprise and potential.

Some of the squad will have helped their chances of being named in the final selection for Russia. Others meanwhile, left their inclusions in doubt.
