Everton: Wayne Rooney's short return a successful one

Wayne Rooney’s move to DC United, a terribly kept secret for the last month, has finally been confirmed, with the player signing a three-and-a-half year contract with the MLS team. 

This marks the end of Rooney’s return to his boyhood club, with many reporting that his wages were just too high to be kept around.

But just how good was his return to his boyhood club? Will it be remembered as a success, or will Everton’s highest paid player of all-time be perceived as a waste of money?

Magical moments

Wayne Rooney’s return excited the Everton fans, who would finally see that 16-year-old wonderkid return after twelve years of success elsewhere. Fans craved moments of magic from Rooney, and this he certainly delivered on.

With the opening home game of the season, Stoke City looked the team more likely to score in a drab affair. And then came Wayne Rooney. Making a late run into the box, he met Dominic Calvert-Lewin's cross with a looping header, sparking wild celebrations from the overjoyed Everton fans.
