Once derided, fullbacks are now often amongst the most creative and important players in modern football. Russia 2018 did not buck the trend, as each of the semi-finalists featured at least one outstanding fullback or wingback.
With Germany and Spain eliminated earlier than expected, and Brazil at the quarter-final stage, it ensured it wasn't the usual suspects that stood out. In their place, many a welcome surprise.
