PS Plus Premium: Can you download PS3 games?

A new PlayStation Plus service is on the way in June but this new service comes with plenty of questions. If you're looking to take advantage of the PlayStation Plus Premium tier and don't quite know how PS3 games work, this is what you should know about whether you can download them.

What is the new PlayStation Plus?

The new PlayStation Plus is a rebranding of PlayStation Plus, alongside game streaming, new trials, exclusive discounts and so much more. This is an effort to combine PS Plus and PS Now into one service.

You can pick up in three different tiers, all offering extra bonuses and new games. It will be officially launching this June - even though we don't have a defined release date just yet. It seems like the initial rollout will start at the beginning of June but it may take some time to arrive worldwide.

Can you download PS3 games on PlayStation Plus Premium?

With PlayStation Premium, you are granted access to monthly free games, discounts, cloud storage, online multiplayer, PS Now and a few more things. As well as this, you get access to a backlog of hundreds of PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games but the details are a little iffy right now.

On the official PlayStation blog, it says:

  • Adds up to 340* additional games, including:
    • PS3 games available via cloud streaming
    • A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations

This is pretty odd wording, implying that PS3 games will not be available to download. Though this could change at a later date, this is all we have to go off right now. It seems that, if you want to play PS3 games, you will need a pretty steady internet connection to really get the most out of it.
