PS4: All But One PS4 Model Discontinued In Japan

In November 2020 the next generation of consoles were released.

On November 10th the Xbox Series X was released, followed by the PlayStation 5 on November 12th/19th depending on the region.

PS4 Discontinued

Sony Japan have announced that they will be discontinuing all but one PlayStation 4 model.

The PS4 Pro and all but one PS4 Slim model have been taken out of production, while the original PS4 design was already discontinued prior to the PS5 launch.

It does make sense as the PS4 Pro retails for $399, the same price of the digital PlayStation 5, so as production levels out and stock becomes readily available, it is understandable that Sony will be looking to increase their sales of the next gen system as quickly as possible.

The Future Of The PS4 In The West

So far this move is only taking place in Japan, but it is likely that it will carry over to western countries, such as the US and European countries, over the coming months.

Normally there is some overlap between the generations, with games being released for both the last and next gen systems.

But with the new systems being vastly superior to the previous consoles, we've already seen sacrifices being made for games so they can be released on both systems.

Most notably Cyberpunk, the last gen console port was so broken that Sony removed it from its platform and both Sony and Microsoft have been issuing refunds for it.

So to prevent this sort of controversy happening time and time again, it could be wise to try and push players into next gen as quickly as possible.

How Long Will The PS4 Be Supported

Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO, Jim Ryan, has said that support for the PS4's huge playerbase will continue until at least 2022, meaning players, that don't want to jump to next gen yet, will continue to be able to play the latest games.

However, over time we will see less and less games get released for the system as focus shifts over to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

But don't worry, games such as a FIFA will continue to be released on PS4 for many years to come, the last game to ever be released on the PlayStation 2 was FIFA 14, released just 3 weeks before the launch of the PlayStation 4.
