Capcom Adds Past-Gen Patch of Resident Evil 2 to Steam

The next-gen versions of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7, have all been given 4k Resolution support, Higher framerates and raytracing to further enhance the experience for the next-gen consoles of Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

For PC, only the ray-tracing was added as the other options were already implemented or unnecessary but the update came at a cost for fans of Resident Evil 2. The requirements to play the title increased, making it more difficult for fans on lower-end systems to enjoy.

The update also broke multiple mods that were compatible with the game, a big blow to fans who participate in Resident Evil 2's sizable modding community.

In response to this criticism from players, Capcom listened and added the old patch back into the game as an option for those who don't wish to play the next-gen version.

How To Fix The Steam Version of Resident Evil 2 For Mods?

Reverting your version of Resident Evil 2 back to the pre-next-gen patch is actually a really simple process and one that's likely familiar to gamers who have participated in any alphas or beta on Steam.

To fix Resident Evil 2 on Steam for modding purposes, you need to do the following.

  • Click onto the Library Tab on Steam
  • Find Resident Evil 2 in your library
  • Right-click on Resident Evil 2 and select "properties"
  • In the pop-up menu click on "BETAS"
  • Click on the drop-down menu, select "dx11_non_rt"
  • Close the menu and wait for the update to install.

Resident Evil 2 should be perfectly playable from this point onwards but some of the settings might be reset. If you wish to re-install the next-gen version of the game at any point, simply follow the steps above but when you open the drop-down menu, click "none" instead of "dx11_non_rt"
