2022 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix Preview

Formula 1 is back after the mid-season break, and we are heading to Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Last year's race provided an incredible spectacle, and this year could offer more of the same with the prospect of rain on Sunday.

Last Time: Hungarian Grand Prix

The Hungarian Grand Prix was another step in the right direction for Mercedes as they made it a double podium two races in a row.

Lewis Hamilton also picked up a point for the fastest lap, showing further progress for a team that has struggled to keep pace all season.

Max Verstappen strengthened his grip on the title with his eighth win of the season, stretching his lead to 80 points from Charles Leclerc.

The Dutchman started 10th on the grid and despite a full 360 spin, still managed to romp home to yet another P1.

The Championship Lowdown

Verstappen's 80-point lead is surely unassailable at this stage, with only a complete meltdown possibly preventing him from claiming another Championship.

Behind him, Sergio Perez sits just five points behind Leclerc, with just 12 points separating George Russell in 4th and Lewis Hamilton in 6th.

It is a similar story in the Constructors standings too, with Red Bull's lead over Ferrari just shy of 100.

Mercedes have quietly snuck up on Ferrari who are 30 points ahead and will now be keen to catch their rivals in the second half of the season.

Storylines and Predictions

The silly season is well and truly underway with the Oscar Piastri fiasco still ongoing, but this week's big news comes from McLaren.

Fan-favourite Daniel Ricciardo will be leaving McLaren at the end of the season, to be replaced by Piastri.

Ricciardo has been keen to stress his desire to continue racing in Formula 1, so the rest of the season will be his chance to show he still has what it takes.

With Alpine still searching to replace Fernando Alonso, could we see a return for Ricciardo next season?
