What is TGL? Everything you need to know about Rory McIlroy and Tiger Wood's new tech-based golf league

Two of golf's biggest names have joined forces to announce that they will be heading a brand-new golf league and no, it's not LIV!

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have teamed up with the PGA Tour to head a new, high-tech golf league, which is set to bring the sport of golf to a brand new TV audience.

The TGL is set to launch in 2024, and will run in partnership with the PGA Tour. Here is everything that you need to know about the latest addition to the golfing circuit.

What is TGL?

The TGL is a brand-new, tech-based golf league that will be heading to our screens in 2024.

Unlike the LIV Golf Invitational, TGL will run alongside the PGA Tour, with the event pitting two teams against each other in a high-tech arena, that is set to bring the sport of golf to a brand new audience.

The competition will consist of six teams, each featuring three PGA Tour golfers. A 15-match regular season will get underway in January 2024, with a playoff and championship match to follow upon the conclusion of the regular season.

TGL Format

The format of the golf itself has not been disclosed. However, there are a few key elements which have been announced.

The golfers will compete in a "tech-infused venue" which has been described as "a first-of-its-kind experience for golf, enabled by a data-rich, virtual course complete with a tech-infused, short-game complex."

It appears as though there will be a two-hour time-limit for each of the matches, with every shot set to be broadcast live across the globe in a primetime slot.

TGL Participants

As we've already alluded to, it is Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods who headline the TGL thus far, with the duo set to play a key role in taking the competition to the next generation of golfers.

The remainder of the lineup will be announced in due course and whilst nothing has been officially confirmed, it would appear that LIV Golf players will not be eligible to compete in the PGA-backed event.

Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Smith are among the top-ranked players who have been linked with a switch to the LIV Invitational following the conclusion of the season-ending FedExCup. Will this latest development provide a change of heart?
