When does the 2022 Tour de France start?

Cycling's most prestigious event returns this summer as the 2022 Tour de France gets underway.

The tour is a 23-day behemoth of a competition, running across 21 day-long stages and spanning over 3500 kilometres in distance.

As is traditional, the 2022 route will once again pass through the Pyrenees mountains and the Alps, ending with a sprint down the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

When does the 2022 Tour de France start?

The structure of the 2022 Tour de France is somewhat unusual, with the first stage set to take place on Friday, July 1st in the Danish Capital of Copenhagen.

After the individual time-trial stage on day one, the riders will cover almost 400km across Saturday and Sunday before reaching Sønderborg.

Due to the 2022 tour starting in Denmark, Monday, July 4th will be a transfer day as the riders travel to Dunkirk for the start of Stage 5.

Tuesday, July 5th, marks the start of the main section of the tour and is also a date of note to English fans hoping to attend a stage of the 2022 tour. Stage 5 comes to an end in Calais with fans able to view the closing moments of the stage via two ferry ports.

The tour then runs uninterrupted until Sunday, July 10th, with Monday representing the first of two rest days.

Stage 10 of the 2022 Tour de France starts on Tuesday, July 12th with the action continuing every day until the end of Stage 15 on Sunday, July 17th, when the riders will enjoy their second and final rest day.

The final section of the tour starts on Tuesday, July 19th and runs until Sunday, July 24th, when the final stage will take place across the French Capital of Paris.
