Who has won the most World Cups?

The 2022 World Cup is underway, with 32 nations looking to bring home the greatest prize in football.

The World Cup began back in 1930, with host nation Uruguay picking up the inaugural title in a hot-blooded competition. Only seven other nations have been named victorious on the world stage since then.

But who is the most successful nation in the history of the competition? Let's take a look.

Who has won the most World Cups?

As we have already alluded to, despite the fact that we are currently embroiled in the 22nd FIFA World Cup, there have only been eight victorious nations in the history of the competition.

No nation has been named World Champions more frequently than Brazil. The Selecao Canarinho have picked up the title a whopping five times, with their most recent success coming in 2002.

Germany is the joint-most successful European nation in the history of the competition. They have four titles to their name, with Mario Gotze's extra-time winner securing their most recent title back in 2014.

Italy sits alongside Germany with four titles in their trophy cabinet, with perhaps their most famous coming in 2006, as they defeated 10-man France on penalties following Zinedine Zidane's history-making headbutt.

Argentina, France and Uruguay follow with two titles a piece, whilst Spain and England each have one.
