Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse is making her second US Open appearance this summer, having previously reached the first round of the competition in 2021.
The 24-year-old is something of a new name to tennis fans, having only transitioned into a regular Grand Slam qualifier in 2022. Ruse will be hoping to reach a career-best third-round Grand Slam appearance when she faces Gauff in midweek.
Ruse's 2022 season has produced little to shout about, following up a second-round defeat at the Australian Open with first-round knockouts at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.
