Blizzard previews Dragonflight Talent System

Coming new in World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is the re-introduction of talent trees as the classes' new Talent System. Via a blog post on the official World of Warcraft website, Blizzard gave insights into the Talent System's Design Philosophy.

With the revamp of the game's classes and talents, Blizzard intends to "increase player agency" when it comes to their character's progression and build. This would produce "meaningful rewards" while leveling, and further reinforcing characters' connection to their class and their spec.

IDENTITY: The new Talent System looks to give classes more identity

"Visually, trees are still an intuitive way to represent the different paths one could follow while making many choices about a character," stated Blizzard in the blog post.

They are also set to show "dependencies and magnitude intuitively," making it easier for players to understand what roles each spell fulfills. This will be shown off by the talent trees having the stronger and more powerful talents amongst the top of the tree while the more "optional" talents sit towards the bottom.

Dragonflight Talent System uses two trees

As opposed to one single tree WoW players would fill up in the past, Dragonflight introduces two. This is largely due to the "combined importance of classwide and specialization-specific themes for current WoW characters" rising as the game has progressed.

NEW SYSTEM: Dragonflight introduces two trees in its Talent System

The first tree, or the "class tree," contains a core set of abilities that are available to all specs in a class, an example of this would be utility-based abilities. It's a place where, if the player so chooses, they can draw from spells or passives from other specs to give their class a "hybrid flavor."

The second tree, or the "specialization tree," gets into the nitty-gritty of the spec. It's focused on bonuses that enhance the class' chosen role and gives the option to give up certain aspects of their class in return for more power somewhere else.

Lastly, classes will now be further represented in the tree, instead of just it being automatic while leveling. Apart from the starting abilities that are given prior to being able to access the system at level 10, a majority of the spells will be obtained via the tree.

Dragonflight Talent Tree rundown

To round out it, Blizzard gave a bit of an explanation of how the new talent tree experience will go.

Players' first class tree point will be awarded at level 10, and their first specialization point at level 11. They then alternate from there; players should have a total of 31 available class points and 30 specialization points at level 70 which will be the new max level.

Certain basic abilities in the class tree are given automatically to players of particular specializations and do not cost points. Adding on to that, most talent will have prerequisites, similar to past talent trees, and will be indicated by arrows in the UI. If a talent has arrows leading to it, players must have fully purchased at least one of the previous talents to access it.

Every tree has certain rows that players can't advance past until they have spent a certain number of talent points. Lastly, in the octagonal "choice" nodes, players can unlock one of the two choices at a time.
