Smaller Xbox Series X chip reportedly in Development

The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 launched just over a year ago and we're already prepping for its future. Some recent news may hint at something big. Here's what we know about the new Series X chip so far.

New Smaller Series X Chip

As originally spotted by Pure Xbox, a journalist and content creator named Brad Sams has claimed in a recent video that Microsoft are working on a smaller, more efficient Series X chip.

You can check out the video for yourself right here. He went over how hardware works in tech and what he knows so far. In it, he said:

"I believe it is accurate the Microsoft is working on a smaller, more power efficient chip. That is, I'm very confident in that."

He also said that Microsoft have likely been working on something similar since about 12 months prior to the launch of the console. They would have locked in their design for production in 2019 and then spent the next few years working off that architecture.

What Does This Mean?

This is a very natural process for a console and means a great many things. A more compact chip means more room internally for better thermals or a slightly different design. There's a chance future models will remain the same size and just have slightly better temperature control.

After more batches of the console come out and more modifications and made, the team are likely to move onto a smaller console. We likely won't get a Series S the size of a Series X just yet but we're slowly taking steps towards it. Most importantly, this is just something that happens in the life cycle of a console. They learn its limitations and continue to make the best machine they can, based on that. The current generation is reaching for its peak.
